DNB press: Wineke Gartz has created a spatial installation especially for this solo exhibition, which includes video projections, drawings, and objects with which she reacts to the architecture and surroundings of the DNB building. The rocks dotted around this site are - somewhat prosaically - intended to prevent ram raids, but at the same time Gartz associates them - rather poetically - with prehistoric times and wild nature. Through this device, nature becomes entangled with the interior. On the walls, interspersed with drawings, she screens video footage of the people, the streets, and the hustle and bustle in and around Amsterdam. The overall effect transforms the art gallery into a rich tableau vivant, entirely enveloping the viewer. Gartz invites us all in her quest for harmony between man and technology, economy and nature. As an accomplished VJ, her compositions both conjure up imagery using state-of-the-art multimedia and unequivocally evoke seventeenth-century landscape painters, such as Jacob van Ruisdael. The overall experience submerges the viewer in a multidimensional stratification – an accumulative layering of space and time.

De rotsblokken rondom dit gebouw zijn -heel prozaïsch- bedoeld om ramkraken te voorkomen, maar daarnaast Gartz associeert deze ook, -heel poëtisch- met de oertijd en woeste natuur. Zo haalt ze de natuur naar binnen. Tegelijkertijd toont ze op de muren videobeelden van mensen, straten en bedrijvigheid in en rondom Amsterdam, gelardeerd met tekeningen. Daarmee transformeert zij de Kunstruimte tot een monumentaal levend schilderij dat de bezoeker volledig omringt. Zo betrekt Gartz ons allemaal in de zoektocht naar de harmonie tussen mens en techniek, economie en natuur. En terwijl zij als een begenadigd dj tovert met moderne multimediale middelen, zien we in de luchten en wolkenpartijen van haar compositie onmiskenbaar de sporen van 17de-eeuwse landschapsschilders als Jacob van Ruisdael terug. Het doet ons onderdompelen in een multidimensionale gelaagdheid – een gelaagdheid in ruimte en tijd.
