For the new site-specific installation Mother Song II at Fotomuseum Hilversum, Gartz worked on location for a month on an immersive multimedia installation in which video projections, photography, sound, textiles, and architectural elements come together. Mother Song II is a spiritual work about action, silence, and movement. It revolves around activism, but above all about the inner conflicts people experience in times of war and resistance.
In Mother Song II, Gartz connects her fascination with activism with her interest in hypnosis, rhythm, and the healing power of art. Everything in the space is aimed at intensifying the visitors' perception and evoking a meditative state within them. The work builds upon Mother Song I (2022), which originated from the personal archive of Gartz’s parents, filled with protest photos, magazines, leaflets, and video clips. For Mother Song II, the artist combines this archive with images of recent protests she attended herself, including the Feminist March in Amsterdam. Historical protest images also play a role in the work, such as those from Pentagram Day on May 13, 1986, organized by Women for Peace. Women for Peace was a protest movement against nuclear weapons, for peace, a cleaner earth, equality for women, and marginalized groups. Gartz’s mother was part of this group of women.
By bringing together archival material, new images, abstract forms, objects, and sound, Gartz makes the energy of protest palpable once again in the present. Movement and stillness, love and pain, darkness and light come together in an installation that invites visitors not only to look, but also to experience the work physically and emotionally.
The soundtrack of rousing drumbeats, interspersed with moments of deep silence, was composed especially for Mother Song by Dirk Bruinsma. For Mother Song II, the artist has added sound fragments of protest songs to it.

Voor de nieuwe site-specifc installatie Mother Song II bij Fotomuseum Hilversum werkte Gartz een maand lang op locatie in het museum aan een meeslepende multimediale installatie waarin videoprojecties, fotografie, geluid, textiel en architectonische elementen samenkomen. Mother Song II is een spiritueel werk over actie, stilte en beweging. Het draait om activisme, maar vooral om de innerlijke conflicten die mensen ervaren in tijden van oorlog en verzet.
In Mother Song II, verbindt Gartz haar fascinatie voor activisme met haar interesse in hypnose, ritme en de helende kracht van kunst. Alles in de ruimte is erop gericht het waarnemen van de bezoekers te intensiveren en bij hen een meditatieve staat op te roepen. Het werk bouwt voort op Mother Song I (2022), dat ontstond vanuit het persoonlijke archief van Gartz’ ouders, gevuld met protest foto's, tijdschriften, folders en videofragmenten. Voor Mother Song II combineert de kunstenaar dit archief met beelden van recente protesten waarbij zij zelf aanwezig was, waaronder de Feminist March in Amsterdam. Ook historische protest beelden spelen een rol in het werk, zoals die van Pentagramdag op 13 mei 1986, georganiseerd door Vrouwen voor Vrede. Vrouwen voor Vrede was een protestbeweging die tegen kernwapens, voor vrede, een schonere aarde, gelijkwaardigheid voor vrouwen en gemarginaliseerde groepen. Gartz’ moeder maakte deel uit van deze groep vrouwen
Door archiefmateriaal, nieuwe beelden, abstracte vormen, objecten en geluid samen te brengen, maakt Gartz de energie van protest opnieuw voelbaar in het heden. Beweging en verstilling, liefde en pijn, donker en licht komen samen in een installatie die bezoekers uitnodigt om niet alleen te kijken, maar het werk ook lichamelijk en emotioneel te ervaren.
De soundtrack van opzwepende trommelslagen, afgewisseld met momenten van diepe stilte, is speciaal voor Mother Song gecomponeerd door Dirk Bruinsma. Voor Mother Song II heeft de kunstenares daar geluidsfragmenten van strijdliederen aan toegevoegd.
